Alpha lipoic acid along with vitamins C and E are the body’s main line of defense against free radicals. Alpha lipoic acid has been identified as the ideal antioxidant as unlike vitamin C which is water soluble, or vitamin E which is fat soluble, it has the ability to neutralize free radicals both in lipids as well as in the aqueous  parts of a cells.

Alpha lipoic acid is composed of two different types of forms (isomers)the ‘R’ and ‘S’ type which exhibit very different properties. The ‘R’ type is its biological active form (native tothehuman body) responsible for its antioxidant properties, while the ‘S’ type is chemically manufactured and is not highly biologically active.
