Curcumin and saffron are two commonly used spices that have been increasingly investigated for their antidepressant effects.

Saffron is characterized by the bioactive components, safranal and crocins, which are responsible for the spice’s aroma and characteristic red color.

There is evidence that crocins act as reuptake inhibitors of dopamine and norepinephrine, while safranal acts primarily on serotonin reuptake.

Curcumin is the main curcuminoid found in the rhizome of turmeric. Tetrahydrocurcumin is the main active of curcumin and may provide higher antioxidative effects and additional neuroprotective effects.
