Coenzyme Q10 is a vitamin-like substance found in the mitochondria of all cells in the human body. There it is an essential component of the mitochondrial electron transport chain (respiratory chain), contributing to the production of cellular energy.
As it plays an important role in energy production, concentrations of coenzyme Q10 are highest in organs with high energy demands (such as the heart, muscles, brain, liver and lungs). Increasing age and the use of drugs such as statins reduce the body’s production of coenzyme Q10.
